Several times a year, the family will hold a small memorial ceremony to honor and remember their loved ones who have passed away. This occasion is known as a “đám giỗ” (ancestral memorial ceremony). Preparing for a đám giỗ requires many items: meats, fish, vegetables, fruits to cook the dishes; polishing the incense burner, cleaning the altar, and burning paper money as offerings for the departed. A đám giỗ is also a time of reunions and gatherings for family members and neighbors.
