Find answers to some of our most common questions
When you “adopt” a book, it’s uniquely yours! You will have a chance to opt to have your name written on your adopted book(s) – example – during checkout. We will also keep you updated on its unique journey — ordered, shipped, handed over to schools libraries, how they are borrowed, and read by students. We’re refining a system to make these updates easier for schools and librarians, so stay tuned as we work on an efficient follow-up plan.
Sadly we can’t accept second-hand book donations from any sources – even if they’re in great condition, as we focus on quality and relevance. We only send books at our schools libraries’ requests, and by working with both educators and publishers directly we can make sure that we acquire the books that are relevant and truly needed by schools. If you do have secondhand books and would like to support our work, you may consider a book sale in your community and Support our Team. 🙂
We’re beginning small to ensure quality impact. By starting with fewer books, we can refine our processes, maximize impact, and build a strong foundation before scaling up.
Schools we work with are chosen after carefully assessing and aligning schools’ needs and our organization’s mission, where we can also have measures to overcome logistical and operational challenges to make sure we can observe and analyse the impacts of our program in a long run. We’re certainly open to more schools and locations. If you know any schools that might need our support through Adopt a Book program, please refer them to contact us.
Our mission is to make books available, accessible, and affordable to underserved communities. By working directly with schools and negotiating discounts, we ensure that every donation reaches students who need it most. There is a term in our agreement with schools that they need to make sure all books received from our program need to be accessible to all students. We’re also refining a system to make follow-ups on the impacts easier for schools and librarians, so stay tuned as we work on an efficient follow-up plan.
At A Thousand Hopes, 100% of book-designated donations go directly to purchasing books for schools in need. To cover essential operational costs such as logistics, website, and program coordination, we offer the Support Our Team option.
In 2024, thanks to free domain, volunteers and publisher support, our operating expenses were minimal (e.g. only printing stickers for donated books). As a result, the Board decided to allocate all Support Our Team contributions toward purchasing additional books that were not yet adopted.
We aim to continue this approach in future years: using any surplus from operational funds to maximize the number of books delivered.
